Valse zonnebloemen van Blake

Age Teaching Youth

Two Sunflowers Move in the Yellow Room

“Ah, William, we’re weary of weather,”
said the sunflowers, shining with dew.
“Our traveling habits have tired us.
Can you give us a room with a view?”
They arranged themselves at the window
and counted the steps of the sun,
and they both took root in the carpet
where the topaz tortoises run.

William Blake Nancy Willard
A school librarian has discovered that a poem widely attributed to William Blake, including in school reading lists, was not really written by him.
Rather than the work of an English poet in the 19th Century, Two Sunflowers Move into the Yellow Room was written in the United States in the 1980s.
This mislabelling shows how the internet can replicate errors, warns Thomas Pitchford, a librarian in a Hertfordshire secondary school.
"We just accept too quickly," he says.
[...]
An online search for "Two Sunflowers Move into the Yellow Room" will produce numerous references to this as a poem by William Blake, the radical English writer and artist who died in the 19th Century.
There are essay questions, anthologies, lesson plans, discussion forums, teachers' resources and online reference websites all interpreting this poem as an example of 19th Century poetry.
But Mr Pitchford says that when he saw the poem attributed to William Blake, he immediately thought the style bore little relation to the poet's other work.
He soon established that the poem was really by Nancy Willard and had been published in 1981 in an anthology called A Visit to William Blake's Inn.
But the librarian, who works at Hitchin Boys' School, then realised how far and wide the mistake had travelled, with internet sites copying and distributing the false connection with Blake.

Vals of echt?

Het gaat dus over de “Two Row Wampum treaty, also known as Guswhenta or Kaswehnta, an agreement made between representatives of the Five Nations of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) and representatives of the Dutch government in 1613 in what is now upstate New York.”

Two Row Wampum Treaty
Syracuse.com schreef daar over:
The written treaty was first made public in an article in 1968 by history professor and documents collector L.G. van Loon, who said he obtained it from an unnamed person at the Mississaugua Reservation in Canada. The treaty was given to the Onondagas, and it remains on the territory near Syracuse.
Starna and Gehring, who reviewed a photocopy of the treaty, offered a variety of evidence they said proved it’s a forgery:
  • Many words — including the oft-quoted phrase that the treaty will be valid “so long as the grass is green” — weren’t in use in 1613.
  • The handwriting is a “clumsy blend” of 17th and 20th century styles.
  • The names of the four Indian chiefs who signed the document are the names of villages, not people.
  • The pen strokes are too smooth to have been made by the quill pens in use in 1613.
“Why anyone would even take it seriously is wishful thinking on their parts,” said Gehring, a specialist in 17th Century Dutch who has run the New Netherland Research Center since 1987.
Starna and Gehring also say that Van Loon tried to pass off several other forged documents as real.
"We recorded it in a belt"
John Berry / The Post-Standard
The Onondagas say the validity of a paper treaty drawn up by white settlers is beside the point. Onondaga leaders say they have their own systems of record-keeping — oral tradition and a beaded, Two Row Wampum belt — that are their proof of the treaty.
“Every time there was an event we didn’t write things down like you people do,” Onondaga Chief Irving Powless Jr. said. “We recorded it in a belt.”
The original Two Row Wampum is stored in Canada, Powless said.
That belt was created in 1613, said Onondaga Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, and will be brought out for the celebration next year.
The Onondagas say the beaded belt, which consists of two purple bands running parallel through a light-colored background, symbolizes the canoes of the Haudenosaunee and the ships of the Dutch traveling side by side but not interfering in each other’s affairs.
That marked the first agreement between the Haudenosaunee and whites, and is the bedrock principle that still controls relationships between the two peoples, the Onondagas say.

"Wire fraud" valt onder de US Code Title 18 § 1343 - Fraud by wire, radio, or television:
Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, transmits or causes to be transmitted by means of wire, radio, or television communication in interstate or foreign commerce, any writings, signs, signals, pictures, or sounds for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.
Mail fraud valt onder US Code Title 18 § 1343 - Frauds and swindles
Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, or to sell, dispose of, loan, exchange, alter, give away, distribute, supply, or furnish or procure for unlawful use any counterfeit or spurious coin, obligation, security, or other article, or anything represented to be or intimated or held out to be such counterfeit or spurious article, for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice or attempting so to do, places in any post office or authorized depository for mail matter, any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by the Postal Service, or deposits or causes to be deposited any matter or thing whatever to be sent or delivered by any private or commercial interstate carrier, or takes or receives therefrom, any such matter or thing, or knowingly causes to be delivered by mail or such carrier according to the direction thereon, or at the place at which it is directed to be delivered by the person to whom it is addressed, any such matter or thing, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

It was one of a number of fictitious wills that were the subject of a case known as ‘The Will Forgeries’. Several members of an organized gang were convicted in this case at the Old Bailey in 1844. They identified dormant accounts in the Bank of England that contained large sums of money, then forged wills in the names of the account holders and registered fictitious deaths in the same names. Armed with the death certificates and wills, they obtained probate from the PCC at Doctor’s commons, presented the grants of probate to the Bank and collected the money.
It was remarkably easy to obtain a death certificate up to 1874, when the law was changed. Prior to that, no medical certification was required, so the informant’s word was enough for the registrar to issue a death certificate.
