Rus verzint eigen voorwaarden voor creditcard

Kijk, zo kun je een bank ook gek krijgen.
Dmitry Argarkov was het niet eens met de voorwaarden die de Tinkoff-bank hem stuurde voor zijn creditcard. Dus scande hij het contract, paste het hier en daar aan, ondertekende het en stuurde het terug:

Mr Argarkov's version of the contract contained a 0pc interest rate, no fees and no credit limit. Every time the bank failed to comply with the rules, he would fine them 3m rubles (£58,716). If Tinkoff tried to cancel the contract, it would have to pay him 6m rubles.
Tinkoff apparently failed to read the amendments, signed the contract and sent Mr Argakov a credit card.

De voorwaarden waren dus zodanig, dat Argarkov eigenlijk kon kopen wat hij wilde, tot een eiland in de Stille Zuidzee aan toe.

However, Tinkoff attempted to close the account due to overdue payments. It sued Mr Argakov for 45,000 rubles for fees and charges that were not in his altered version of the contract.

De rechter stelde Argarkov echter grotendeels in het gelijk. Tinkoff heeft het contract ondertekend en is er dus aan gebonden. Het argument van de bank - "We hebben het contract niet gelezen" - werd, je raadt het al, van tafel geveegd.
Argarkov noch de bank zijn tevreden. Argarkov claimt 24 miljoen Roebel bij de bank wegens contractbreuk en de bank is een zaak wegens fraude begonnen.

Wil je gratis scannen voor de bieb?

Offerteaanvraag van de Library of Congres: of leveranciers alsjeblieft gratis het een en ander willen scannen.

This contract is for the procurement of digitization services for the Library of Congress (Library) at no cost to the Government. The Contractor shall furnish the necessary personnel, material, equipment, services, and facilities (except as otherwise specified) to perform the statement of work included in section C. The Contractor’s technical proposal, entitled _____ dated _____, is made a part of this contract. In the event of any inconsistency between the provisions of this contract and the Contractor’s technical proposal, the contract provisions take precedence.

Het voordeel voor de bibliotheek is duidelijk, maar wat zou het voordeel voor de scanbedrijven zijn?
Die mogen de reproducties "vermarkten" en krijgen daar maximaal drie jaar de tijd voor:

The contractor agrees to digitize the materials and provide the deliverables noted in the other sections of this contract. In return for access to the Library’s materials, the contractor may market and resell access to the digitized collection.
[...]
In exchange for the no-cost digitization of the Library’s materials, the Library will provide the Contractor with access to Library materials. The Library also may provide the Contractor with:
A. space in the Library’s buildings for the Contractor’s equipment and other in-kind resources necessary to support the functions identified in each digitization contract, as appropriate (see C.3 and C.6, below); and
B. a period of time during which the Library will not make the digitized material available online (i.e., allow the vendor an opportunity to recoup first copy costs through commercial use of the digitized materials); however, in no case will the delay period be greater than three (3) years.

Het is me niet duidelijk of hier al bedrijven op gereageerd hebben.

Blauwe en zwarte letters door een blauwe handtekening

Begin deze week las ik allerlei stukken over de vorming van de Nationale Politie, waaronder een scan van een brief van de Kwartiermaker Nationale Politie. Hierboven zie je een uitsnede van de ondertekening van die brief.
Het opvallende aan die ondertekening zijn natuurlijk de blauwe letters et, Ger en d B. Ik neem aan dat deze in de originele brief zwart zijn en vermoed dat de verkleuring iets te maken heeft met de blauwe handtekening die door de letters heen staat, maar begrijp niet hoe dit komt.
Als ik het goed zie, is de scan gemaakt met Xerox Workcentre 7345 maar ik kan in de pdf-eigenschappen verder niets relevants over bijvoorbeeld scanresolutie of kleurinstellingen vinden.
Iemand enig idee hoe dit komt?
Of hoe het eventueel te voorkomen is?
Andere vraag is natuurlijk: is dit kleurverloop erg?

Foutjes in Google Books als analoge kunst

Ruim een jaar geleden schreef ik over "Workers leaving the Googleplex", waarin Andrew Norman Wilson liet zien dat de mensen die voor Google Books scannen, een aparte "kaste" zijn. De afgelopen maanden heeft Wilson aan een ander project gewerkt dat draait om de scanfouten in de scans van Google: ScanOps:

ScanOps is (or was) the internal department name for Google’s onsite book scanning contractors.
This new body of work is based on Google Books images in which software distortions, the imaging site, and the hands of ScanOps employees are visible.
Through varied analog versions of these images (image/sculptures, a book), I will further reassert the materiality that composes the digital, as well as the photographic support.

Het gaat Wilson nadrukkelijk niet zozeer om het verzamelen van de fouten, maar om het laten zien van de fysieke, menselijke arbeid bij het digitaliseren van boeken. Vandaar dat er deze zomer een boek zal verschijnen met de foto's en hij de foto's inlijst in kleurige lijsten en in een galerie hangt (foto boven). Tegen Rhizome omschrijft Wilson het - met alle kunstenaars-vaagheden - als volgt:

The photographs that I chose are Google Books images in which software distortions, the imaging site, and the hands of ScanOps employees are visible. They’re both indexical, and medium-specific. Their processes, digital manipulations, and material supports are folded within them. Because of the speed and volume with which Google is executing the Books project, they can't possibly identify and correct all of the disturbances in what is supposed to be a seamless interface. Removed "for me" The accidents then complicate the categorizations of “immaterial” and “informational” labor in the Information Technology sector.

Someone has to turn a page and press a button. The workers compose part of the photographic apparatus, which, conceived in a broad sense includes not only the machinery, but the social systems within which photography operates. The anonymous workers, electrons, Sergey and Larry, the pink finger condoms, infrared cameras, the auto-correction software, the ink on my rag paper prints, me, the capital required to fund the project - we're all in it. It's not a dematerialized image world.

En ik vraag me dan af: mag Wilson dat boek wel verkopen? Mag hij zomaar geld verdienen aan de scans van Google?
