Landau is expected to turn himself in to prison authorities in August, and when he gets out of prison, he will spend three years on probation. As a special condition of his release, however, he won't be able to go to an archive or museum without the approval of his probation officer.
Prosecutors today displayed a tan trench coat and navy blazer in court, both of them specially altered by Landau's tailor to contain deep pockets.
The pair, who referred to each other as 'weasel 1' and 'weasel 2', attempted to cover up the thefts by removing card catalogue listings for the items and using sandpaper and other methods to remove museum markings - a process they called 'performing surgery'.
Lees vooral ook de blog van Otto van der Meij over de "life and times" van Landau.

Stealing from Archives

This table shows 24 institutions, i.e. 25 per cent, stating that they have not taken any security precautions at all in relation to their own staff. Probably too, a large proportion of the 20 institutions (21 per cent) not answering this question had not taken any theft prevention measures either. The other 52 institutions (54 per cent) report various types of security arrangement targeting their own staff. Half of them state that they restrict staff access to all or parts of the archival material and/or can trace staff movements with the aid of electronic card systems. Other security measures are represented by the following quotations:
"Staff bag searching on a random basis; Staff required to use the electronic order system so all staff use books is recorded; CCTV; All staff and long term contractors are security cleared via the (…) police national computer."
"Members of the staff are not allowed to stay in the archives after working hours. Bags are not allowed to be taken to the store’s zone."
Archive thefts prompted by political motives are very often concerned with blacking out personal contacts with political movements or defunct socialist dictatorships. One specific item in the questionnaire concerned the occurrence of thefts of politically sensitive material. Six institutions (6 per cent) reported having experienced this. In four instances the purpose of the theft, presumably, was for the particular information in the stolen documents to remain unknown, while in one instance the opposite was intended: the document was stolen with a view to passing on sensitive information to the media.

8 februari 2012
Specifically, according to Landau’s plea, Landau and Savedoff visited the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, N.Y., on Dec. 2, 2010. Landau and Savedoff stole from the library, among other things, seven reading copies of speeches delivered by President Roosevelt. Reading copies are the actual copies of the speeches from which President Roosevelt read and contain edits and handwritten additions made by him and bear his signature. Four reading copies of speeches were sold by Landau on Dec. 20, 2010, to a collector for $35,000. Three other reading copies were the inaugural addresses delivered by President Roosevelt on Jan. 20, 1937; Jan. 20, 1941; and Jan. 20, 1945, which are valued at more than $100,000 each, were recovered from Landau’s apartment in New York City during court-authorized searches.
Aanvulling 15 februari 2012
Barry H. Landau Plea Agreement 2012-01-12
I am outraged that Mr. Landau who fashioned himself as a Presidential historian violated the public trust at many of our nation’s greatest historical repositories. He gained the trust of librarians and archivists and took advantage of that relationship to steal from the American people.
I am very grateful to the Department of Justice, the various historical institutions, our own Office of Inspector General, and the many archivists at the National Archives who spent countless hours establishing the provenance of the documents taken from Mr. Landau and his accomplice Jason James Savedoff.
We at the National Archives continue to make strides to ensure that we are protecting our nation’s precious heritage, while at the same time balancing the right of every American to have access to original records.

Savedoff admitted that he and his co-conspirator prepared lists containing the names of historical figures and other noteworthy individuals, and made notations referencing the value of signatures and documents authored or signed by the listed individuals. Savedoff, under the direction of his co-conspirator, conducted research, including via the internet, to identify collections containing valuable documents, which, when located, were targeted for theft.
These techniques included concealing documents inside sports coats and other outerwear which had been modified to contain hidden pockets, as well as distracting museum curators to disguise their actions.
A checklist was prepared for each stolen document which identified the author and date of the document; the collection from which it was stolen; whether the museum card catalogue had been collected; whether there existed any microfilm or other “finding aid” for the document at the museum; the nature of any markings on the document: and whether any museum markings had been removed from the document.

Jason Savedoff may not have just stolen notable documents from the Maryland Historical Society, as police have charged, but prosecutors say he may have flushed at least one down a toilet as police closed in. Assistant State's Attorney Tracy Varda told a judge Tuesday that the document could not be recovered and it is not clear what it was.
They have traced over 200 of them to repositories in five states and Washington, D.C., and possibly, Cambridge University. Many others are, in the words of a prosecutor, "not the kind of things that are accessible — legally accessible — on the open market": letters written by Napoleon Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette, Sir Issac Newton, Ludwig von Beethoven, and a host of prominent scientists, artists, inventors, writers, and political leaders.
Landau introduced himself as a scholar and donated a copy of his first book to the society, and each time he came bearing cookies. But when officials tried to write him a thank-you note, it was sent back as undeliverable. An email address Savedoff gave also appeared to be invalid. Staff became suspicious and called a meeting, and planned to check their driver's licenses upon the next visit. Of Landau, Arnold said: "He certainly was very personable. He had class. He knew how to conduct himself in a research library." But Savedoff, of whom little is known, was "rough around the edges" and "repeatedly asked naive questions," he said.
