Een valse catalogus als provenance voor een valse Whiteley

In New South Wales (Australië) gaat de politie de authenticiteit van het schilderij hierboven onderzoeken. Het staat bekend als Big Blue Lavender Bay van Brett Whiteley en is een tijdje geleden verkocht voor 2,5 miljoen Australische dollar (ruim 2 miljoen Euro).  Naast Big Blue Lavender Bay zijn ook de aan Whiteley toegeschreven schilderijen Orange Lavender Bay en Lavender Bay through the window (detail) verdacht.
De Greater Dandenong Weekly beschrijft de redenen waarom de schilderijen verdacht zijn:

A University of Melbourne forensic report into Orange Lavender Bay, commissioned by Mr Nasteski, concludes that the painting, which is signed ''brett whiteley 88'', ''cannot be ascribed to the oeuvre of Brett Whiteley ''without further evidence''.
It finds that the paint does not behave like paint from 1988 and that the painting is likely to be ''less than five years'' old. The report also states that the painting ''does not have the loose, calligraphic, painterly qualities of works of this subject, Sydney Harbour, that are securely attributed to Brett Whiteley'' and that the painting's motifs ''appear to be a pastiche from a number of other Sydney Harbour works that are by Brett Whiteley and have secure provenance''. The report notes that the painting is particularly similar to Whiteley's authentic Big Orange (sunset), from 1974, which is in the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Een andere aanwijzing dat de schilderijen vals zijn is een expositiecatalogus uit 1989, die gebruikt werd om de herkomst van Orange Lavender Bay te bewijzen:

But Neil Holland, of Scientific Document Services, who conducted tests on the catalogue, said that in his opinion, ''the catalogue could not have been printed at that time [the late 1980s] because the technology and the resolution [exhibited by the catalogue] just wasn't available at that time''. The origin of the suspect catalogue is unclear.

Alles bij elkaar lijken de kunsthandelaren Peter Gant en John Playfoot de kwade genieën. De catalogus waar Orange Lavender Bay in zou staan is van de gallerie van Gant (Peter Gant Fine Art), Gant heeft Lavender Bay through the Window gebruikt om een schuld bij een restaurateur te vereffenen en Playfoot heeft op een gegeven briefje gefaxt waar uit zou moeten blijken dat de drie schilderijen eigendom zijn geweest van een assistent van Whiteley. En toen in 2010 bleek dat Orange Lavender Bay waarschijnlijk vals was, heeft Playfoot de toenmalige koper het aankoopbedrag terug betaald. (Dat laatste is trouwens gebruikelijk in kunstkringen.)

Wordt dus nog vervolgd...
