Electronic Records Archives in Action

Filmpje van NARA over overbrenging van archieven met behulp van hun Electronic Records Archive.
The National Archives is now changing the way we take custody of records from federal agencies. We are now using the Electronic Records Archives, or ERA. ERA is not only a system for storing electronic records. We are currently transferring permanent textual records on a daily basis using ERA. The Department of the Navy demonstrates how ERA was used to transfer deck logs to the legal and physical custody of the National Archives. ERA replaces a paper-based system that could take months.
Overigens was ERA een tijdje geleden in het nieuws vanwege enorme budget-overschrijdingen:
NARA Electronic Records Archive (ERA) will likely cost $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion when completed, exceeding the current $995 million estimated cost by 21% to 41%, according to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The agency blames the increased costs on the agency's ineffective use of a project-management technique aimed at making it easier, not harder, to manage a project.

But the era of the paper record is almost over

And so we need to be able to have a place to store those things where they're no longer trapped on the particular media on which they're originally stored or created. Websites, wiki's and blogs, Twitter feeds, all of these things are being used by federal agencies now to communicate with the public and they're creating federal records. The Electronic Records Archives, ERA, gives us a way to bring in the records, it gives us a place to store the records safely and preserve them.
