Tom Cruise die in Minority Report werkt voor de afdeling PreCrime van de politie

Oh dear, oh dear, fictie komt nu toch echt te dicht bij de werkelijkheid.

Een onderdeel van het Amerikaanse ministerie van "Homeland Security" werkt aan Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST), een systeem dat misdaden en overtredingen van individuele mensen kan voorspellen. Het Electronic Privacy Information Center heeft een hele reeks FOIA-verzoeken (Amerikaanse WOB-verzoeken) ingediend en schrijft:

According to documents published by the Department of Homeland Security, FAST is a Minority Report style initiative that seeks to determining the probability that an individual, who is not suspected of any crime, might commit a future criminal act. Under the FAST program, the DHS will collect and retain of a mix of "physiological and behavioral signals" from individuals as they engage in daily activities.

FAST is designed to allow the agency capture biological and behavioral information from subjects. According to a 2008 Privacy Impact Assessment prepared by the agency, the DHS intends to monitor and collect data including "video images, audio recordings, cardiovascular signals, pheromones, electrodermal activity, and respiratory measurements."

Volgens CBS is er afgelopen jaar al een proef "in het wild" gedaan, niet op een vliegveld maar op een "large venue that is a suitable substitute for an operational setting." Binnenkort wordt blijkbaar een tweede proef gedaan:

It also says that the next field trial of FAST will involve members of the public who "have food service experience" and are paid "to work at a one day VIP event." Most of the document is redacted, but each person is apparently told to act normally or to do something demonstrating "mal-intent," such as being told to smuggle a recording device into the VIP event. The trick, then, is to see if FAST can detect which is which.

De spin waarmee het ministerie FAST onschadelijker voorstelt dan het is, is te vinden in het gebruik van de term "non-intrusively" en de verzekering dat het systeem niet in staat is of bedoeld is om "personally-identifiable information" op te slaan. Dat laatste zeiden ze ook over de naaktscanners...
