De bekende wereld van 2348 v. Chr. tot 1828 n. Chr.

Uit Slate:
Englishman Edward Quin’s 1830 atlas, Historical Atlas in a Series of Maps of the World as Known at Different Periods, with an Historical Narrative, featured 21 plates that visually depicted what Quin called “the world as known at different periods.” Dramatic clouds cover the “unknown,” rolling back slowly as time moves on.
De individuele kaarten zijn eigendom van David Rumsey en hier vind je een uitgebreide toelichting bij iedere kaart.

De geschiedenis van de wereld in Wikipedia 100 seconden

A History of the World in 100 Seconds from Gareth Lloyd on Vimeo.

Many Wikipedia articles are tagged with geographic coordinates. Many have references to historic events. Cross referencing these two subsets and plotting them year on year adds up to a dynamic visualization of Wikipedia's view of world history.
(...)
This is based on the thing that me and Tom Martin built at Matt Patterson's History Hackday. To make it, I built a python SAX Parser that sliced and diced an xml dump of all wikipedia articles (30Gb) and pulled out 424,000 articles with coordinates and 35,000 references to events. We managed to pair up 14,238 events with locations, and Tom wrote some Java to fiddle about with the coordinates and output frames. I've hacked around some more to add animation, because, you know, why not?

Het duurde even voor ik in de gaten had wat ik precies zag, maar het is indrukwekkend. Hieronder een statische weergave van de locatie van Wikipedia-lemma's

Meer ruwe data vind je op de weblog van Gareth Lloyd.

Nederland in 2040

Als het aan de Nederlandse kinderen tussen 12 en 15 ligt
  • vormen de E313 en de E314 in 2040 ongeveer de grens tussen Nederland en Belgie (de leerlingen vinden dat dit ‘na overleg met de buurlanden’ moet kunnen);
  • ligt Zeeland geheel onder water, maar wonen de mensen daar in steden op palen;
  • ligt tussen Londen en Den Haag een brug en
  • is het IJsselmeer helemaal ingepolderd.
Interessant hoor...
